History of Farooqnagar

The history of Farooqnagar and its sister town Shadnagar is one of the most fascinating stories in the southern Telangana belt — a story that connects Nizam-era poetry, royal patronage, space science, and democratic firsts into a single remarkable locality.

Shadnagar was founded between 1869 and 1911 under the sixth Nizam — Mir Mahboob Ali Khan.  (Grokipedia) This period was one of the most culturally vibrant eras in the Hyderabad State, with the Nizam’s court attracting poets, scholars, musicians, and administrators from across the Deccan.

Maharaja Krishnan Prasad, who belongs to Janampeta, was ruling under the 6th Nizam. He was famous among the peers maharaja, and known by his pen name ‘Shad’. Based on the name ‘Shad’, Shadnagar was formed.  (Telangana Tourism)

The name derives from “Shad,” the pen name of Maharaja Sir Kishen Pershad Bahadur, a prominent minister and poet from Janampeta who served under the Nizam and influenced local governance. Prior to this, the surrounding region formed part of the Deccan territories historically governed by dynasties including the Satavahanas (c. 230 BCE–220 CE) and Kakatiyas (c. 1163–1323 CE).

The name “Farooqnagar” similarly carries a Nizam-era origin. It is named after Farooq, a reference to one of the Nizam’s administrative officers or a local jagirdar who governed this region under the Asaf Jahi court. Shadnagar is a sister city of Farooq Nagar  (Grokipedia) , and the two towns developed side by side under the same Nizam-era administration.

Shadnagar used to be part of the Mahabubnagar district. However, due to changes in how districts are organized in Telangana, it became part of the Ranga Reddy district.  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District) This administrative reorganization took place on October 11, 2016, when the Government of Telangana formed 31 new districts.

One of the earliest physical reminders of the Nizam era in this region is remarkable — the inspection bungalow built by the Nizams in 1833 A.D.  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District) still stands as a heritage reminder of this area’s administrative past.

Shadnagar town is constituted as Grade III Municipality in the year 24th August 2011.  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District)

A proud historical distinction of this region is its connection to Indian democracy. The first electronic voting machine was tested in this place. It was for the first time in Andhra Pradesh, the electronic voting machine was introduced and it was tested in Shadnagar  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District) — during the 1983 assembly elections held under the NTR era of Telugu Desham Party.

Another landmark moment in this region’s history came in 2002, when Bill Gates visited the community hospital for an immunization session and administered the polio vaccine to residents in 2002.  (Getpincode)

This town is home to a special place called the National Remote Sensing Centre — part of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), India’s space agency.  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District) The Ground Station Complex at Shadnagar, 55 km south of Hyderabad city, NRSA is the prime centre to receive data from various Remote Sensing Satellites both Indian and Foreign origin.  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District)

Shadnagar is situated approximately 47 kilometers southwest of Hyderabad by road along National Highway 44, which connects Hyderabad to Bengaluru and Mumbai.  It is also 25 KM from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad.  (Medchal-Malkajgiri District)
