 History of Habsiguda

The history of Habsiguda is one of the most unique and fascinating origin stories of any locality in Hyderabad. The very name of this neighborhood carries within it a remarkable connection to African history, the Nizam’s military traditions, and the global nature of Hyderabad’s diverse cultural heritage.

The origin of the name Habsiguda may have originated from Habshi meaning African and guda — a suffix for village. Habshi was a common term referring to the Siddi, Africans from Al-Habash (an Arabic term for Abyssinia or Ethiopia).

This barren land was a cattle ground for the Nizams of Deccan Princely State, and was probably the home of the African troops in the Nizam’s military. Abyssinians used to be brought as labourers by the Nizams to take care of their cattle. Habshis (people from Abyssinia) lived for decades in and around this area — hence the name “Habshi-guda” — and now being called as Habsiguda.

Today one can still find these Abyssinians in many parts of Old City and especially in “Barkas”. Many of these people were mixed with local people and accepted in all communities.

This remarkable African connection makes Habsiguda one of the very few localities in all of India whose name directly references the historical presence of African communities in the subcontinent — a testament to Hyderabad’s unique multicultural heritage under the Nizams.

Later, Habsiguda was occupied by many construction and plantation labourers that were brought from surrounding districts to construct Osmania University by Mir Osman Ali Khan, Asaf Jah VII (the last Nizam of Hyderabad Deccan). The construction of the magnificent Osmania University campus — which began in 1917 and was completed in 1939 — brought thousands of workers and artisans to this eastern belt of Hyderabad, and Habsiguda gradually developed as a settlement to house this growing workforce.

Historically, the area served as a cattle ground for the Nizams and functioned as a hamlet under Nacharam village until 1981, later becoming a gram panchayat under Uppal Kalan Municipality before integration into the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). One of the most significant developments in Habsiguda’s modern history was the establishment of world-class scientific research institutions on its land. The Indian Institute of Chemical Technology (IICT) — originally known as the Regional Research Laboratory, Hyderabad (RRL-H) — was set up by CSIR in this area and became one of India’s premier chemical research institutions. RRL-H has the distinction of becoming the first Regional Research Laboratory to be set up by CSIR.

Building upon this scientific foundation, CCMB was set up initially as a semi-autonomous Centre on 1 April 1977 with the Biochemistry Division of the then Regional Research Laboratory (presently, Indian Institute of Chemical Technology, IICT) in Habsiguda, Hyderabad forming its nucleus and Dr. P.M. Bhargava heading the new Centre.

Its development accelerated in the 1990s amid Hyderabad’s suburban expansion, evolving into a mid-segment locality blending residential colonies, educational institutions, and hospitals.

The construction of the Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium at Uppal — just adjacent to Habsiguda — was another landmark development. The Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium and Osmania University are the noted spots along with many other Central Government organisations located here.

The inauguration of the Hyderabad Metro Rail brought three metro stations to the Habsiguda corridor, significantly transforming daily commuting for the area’s residents. The prestigious Hyderabad Metro Rail has a route covering from Nagole to Shilparamam which is laid via Habsiguda. It has three metro stops — one at Cricket Stadium, second at National Geophysical Research Institute, and the other at the crossroads of Habsiguda.
